Meeting David Buerge

I had the distinct privilege of meeting David Buerge, author of Chief Seattle and the Town That Took His Name. He did a reading in a very full conference room at Aljoya, an event put on by the Mercer Island library, with some help from the Mercer Island Historical Society.

David Buerge was a lively speaker and gave us a full hour of highlights from his book–a topic he has studied throughout his career as a historian, educator, and author.

My favorite description of Chief Seattle in the book is by a man named Tolmie. He said Chief Seattle was “a brawny Soquamish with a roman countenance and black curley hair, the handsomest Indian I have seen.”

I will write a full review when I finish the book–I’m about halfway through right now. I’m loving the intricate details of Duwamish history told with lovely, almost whimsical narrative, and at the same time Buerge slips in matter-of-fact details putting everything into perspective.

Letter + Line Studio does amazing work with wedding invitations and did a fantastic job on mine! It was a great experience working with Sarah (even though I am super picky and I’m sure I was a pain in the butt). I got the exact wedding invitations I had envisioned and they were even more beautifully hand-crafted than I imagined (or could have ever done myself). The Weekly Round-Up

Here’s what I’ve been reading this week!

+ The Dwelling Tree has some great tips for Better organized digital photos + 512GB Anywhere Giveaway! The best tip for me was to delete unwanted photos immediately – I am so bad at that!

+ Sorority Life to Army Wife has ideas for Eating Healthy While Traveling. I often find myself stuck in a hotel room with a mini-fridge and a microwave, and it is SO HARD to eat healthy, but she has some great ideas to share!

+ The Cynical Sailor & His Salty Sidekick shared some beautiful photos of Eastern Washington in Desolation, Dust & Tiny Towns {Eastern Washington State}. I love Washington state and I used to drive through the east side of the state fairly often. It really is beautiful, even though it’s pretty desolate at places.
